How do I donate my gold and silver?

  1. Find your unused or unwanted gold, platinum, and silver items.

  2. Fill out a donation form for your charity of choice and submit. Once we receive your form we will email you a prepaid FedEx shipping label. Pack your donation in a ziplock bag and write your name and email address on the bag, put it into a FedEx pak or FedEx box, and drop it off at FedEx.

It’s that easy!

What can I donate?

You can donate real gold (10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, and 24K), such as broken necklaces, brooches, orphan earrings, etc. You can also donate sterling silver jewelry, tableware, trays, and coffee/tea service, but it absolutely must be sterling silver. We cannot accept gold plated or silver plated items.

Can I donate costume jewelry or plated items?

No, it has to be real gold, platinum, or sterling silver.

Do you accept silver?

Yes we do but only sterling silver. It can be jewelry or larger serving pieces, tea sets, silverware, trays and the like. Sterling silver items usually are marked as “sterling” or “.925” somewhere. We cannot accept silver plated items.

I’ve looked in my jewelry box, where else can I look?

Think about other places you might keep jewelry or where you might have jewelry you haven’t used in years — a separate place in a closet or drawer? And don’t forget to talk to other members of your family and ask them to look in their jewelry boxes as well.

Can I donate items even if I don’t know if they are gold?

Yes! You want to donate the items anyway, right? So go ahead and send them in. During processing, we’ll determine whether it’s gold or not. Your tax receipt will tell you the amount of gold in your donation. We cannot return items, but if it can be sold for something we will include that in your receipt as well.

What about gold jewelry with stones? Can I donate those?

Yes you can donate gold jewelry that has stones but these stones are not considered part of your donation because we only process precious metals. The stones will be removed by the refiner and disposed of separately. If you believe the stones are valuable, you may wish to have them removed before you donate.

What if I only have one or two items, is it worth participating?

Of course! Your charity will gladly accept any donation you are able to make.

Some of my gold jewelry is tangled in a ball with non-gold jewelry? What should I do?

If you have jewelry you wish to donate that is gold and it is tangled with other unwanted jewelry, you can send in the whole tangled mess! If it’s tangled with things you want to keep, you can cut the gold jewelry and send it in. It’s all going to be recycled anyway!

Can I use any size re-closable or ziplock bag?

You may use any size bag but just make sure everything is wrapped so it doesn’t rattle.

How can I prevent my jewelry from rattling in the ziplock bag?

You can use bubble wrap or paper towels to wrap around your donation to keep it secure.

Can I choose the charity where the money will go?

Yes! You can direct your donation to any recognized 501(c)(3) U.S. charity (nonprofit). To find out if your favorite charity is authorized, you can search Guidestar. You will need the organization’s Employer Identification Number (EIN) to fill out your donation form. You will find this on Guidestar as well.

How will I know what my charity received from my donation?

After your donation has been received by the refiner, we will send you a donation receipt for your donation that specifies the amount of precious metals donated and the date of donation.

How much of a tax deduction can I get?

You will receive a donation receipt for 100% of the market value of the gold, sterling silver, or platinum you donate! Your personal deductibility may vary; please consult with a tax accountant.

Do you guarantee the highest payout?

Yes. Our process is fully transparent. Don’t fall prey to advertising that manipulates payout statistics by mixing terms like “dwt” (pennyweight), etc. Spot market prices for precious metals are quoted per troy ounce, and scrap metals are weighed in grams. One (1) troy ounce = 31.1035 grams. Your receipt will document your donation weight in grams and the total market value for each type of precious metal donated.

What is a “troy ounce”?

When buying and selling precious metals, a “troy ounce” is the standard unit of measure. One (1) troy ounce = 31.1035 grams. A troy ounce is slightly heavier than a standard ounce.

Can I sell directly to a refiner?

No. Scrap metal refiners only handle large bulk shipments of precious metals that have already been sorted by a processing facility.

How long does it take for my charity to receive their donation?

Your charity will receive a check for your donation in approximately 2-4 weeks. This allows for processing, bundling, and selling the metals to the refiner.

Will I get a receipt for my donation?

Yes. You will receive a donation receipt for 100% of the market value of the gold, sterling silver, or platinum you donate!

How and when will I receive my tax deduction receipt?

It will be emailed to you, detailing your donation by type of metal and its value. Turn around time for processing your donated metals is approximately 1-2 weeks.

How much of the total donation amount goes to the charity?

The charity gets a check for 75% to 85% of gold value, and 70% of sterling silver value. The rest is paid to the refiner to process the precious metals.

Why does silver pay out at a lower percentage?

This is because refiners pay out much less for sterling silver than gold due to the higher level of impurities and higher processing costs.

Do I have to go to a Bring Your Bling event to make a donation?

No! You can request a prepaid FedEx label and ship your donation directly.

Is it safe to send gold jewelry by FedEx?

Yes. Make sure that you wrap it securely. Shipments are insured.

Is it safe to send in my valuables?

Yes! Your donation is fully insured. Our processing partner’s secure laboratory facilities are alarmed, guarded, and monitored by extensive surveillance equipment 24/7.

How will I know how much my donation was worth?

You will receive a detailed valuation report, along with your donation receipt, that will provide the weight of each type of metal donated and the market value of the metal on the day your donation was processed.

Can I ask for a return of an item once I sent it?

No. A donation is considered final once made (just like a cash donation).

Why use Jewelry for Good?

Jewelry for Good maximizes tax deductibility and actual donation amounts. How?

Example:

If a donor were to take $1,000 of gold to a storefront gold buyer then donate the money directly to your charity, the result would be:

  • A $500 tax deduction for the donor (the amount paid by a gold buyer)

  • Your charity would get $500

If instead, a donor were to donate $1,000 of gold and silver directly to Jewelry for Good, the result would be:

  • Jewelry for Good would sort, value and document each donation

  • Your donor would get a $1,000 tax deduction

  • Your organization would get the balance of the $1,000 after processing and refining costs (approximately 25%).
